INXS was already to albums deep before the rest of the world really started to take notice with the third record, Shabooh Shoobah, which arrived in the summer of 1982. Timing was perfect because MTV was on the ascent and scouring the world for interesting telegenic acts. It also helped if the video was filled with hot women.
The One Thing was the band’s first US Top 40 single (#3) and Canada (#20). Defying convention, it was also a decent-sized hit on rock radio, too.
Tim Farriss had this to say about the video: “We made a crazy video at home in Australia for “The One Thing.” We fed valium to a few cats and had them running around a table while we had a feast with sexy models and Playboy centerfolds, ripping apart a turkey. Next thing we knew we had a top 40 hit in America and were opening for Adam Ant.”
