Goth is one of the biggest musical subcultures we have, extending to all corners of the world. But what, exactly, IS Goth, and where did it come from? There’s a new book that explores that topic and was written by someone who has first-hand knowledge of the scene: Lol Tolhurst, the one-time drummer and keyboardist with The Cure.
His book, Goth: A History, takes one of the deepest dives I’ve ever seen into the subject, not only covering the scene that emerged out of the UK in the late 1970s, but also going back much, much further, examining the influence of Mary Shelley, T.S. Eliot, Edgar Allan Poe, Albert Camus and more. He also looks at Goth fashion and the legacy of this scene across film, TV, social media. If you love your music dark, check out Goth: A History by Lol Tolhurst. It’s out now.
