5 songs you must hear this week: 18 February 2019

What would a stat be without some new songs to check out? And there’s some good stuff this week, too.

1. Alexisonfire, Familiar Drugs
Single (for now) (Distort)
RIYL: Drugs that you know.

A cryptic Instagram post had fans freaking out worldwide. And yes, it meant new music from the best screamo band on the planet. And yes, it sounds like Alexisonfire should. This begs the question: What else is on the way? We’ll see, won’t we?

2. Simple Creatures, Drug
Single (for now) (Warner)
RIYL: Any drugs (and blink-182)

Blink-182 isn’t doing much at the moment and neither is All Time Low. So to burn off some creativity, Mark Hoppus and Alex Gaskarth—guys who have known each other forever—whipped up this single with producer Zakk Cervini. A debut EP is due in March.

3. Bring Me the Horizon, Medicine
Amo (RCA)
RIYL: Prescription drugs

Before the album came out on January 25, it was preceded by five singles (nearly 50% of the entire record). Some fans are a little annoyed at the band’s poppier approach, but BMtH evidently thought they’d maxed out on building their fanbase with their original sound. Remember how the group trolled fans about opening for Justin Bieber’s 2016 UK tour? Not entirely a joke, apparently. This record could introduce them to a whole new crowd—but at the expense of some of their long-time fans. Generally, though, reviews have been quite positive.

4. Nikki’s Wives, Lemonade
Single (Independent)
RIYL: Canadian indie bands with loads of potential

I’ve been following this London, Ontario, band for a couple of years now and I really think they’re on the cusp of doing something big. Canada’s Next Big Thing for 2019? It’s impossible to say with certainty (this is the music industry, after all), but I’d keep my eye on them.

5. PUP, Kids
Morbid Stuff (Universal)
Recommended if you like: Listening to songs in your ’97 Camry

One of the great Toronto bands of the 2010s and they just keep getting better. If you’re already a fan, you might now about PUP the Zine Vol 2 which came with a flexi-disc featuring this song when it was mailed to fans last month. The album is due April 5.
