This happens to everyone. A singer or a band appears and everyone around you says that they’re great. But you don’t hear it. Don’t feel it, don’t understand it, don’t get it.
However, over time, your opinion begins to morph. You start to hear things and begin to figure out that this particular artist is, in fact, okay. And then not just okay, but really, really good. Now you’re a big fan.
This is perfectly normal, of course, because music hits each of us in different ways.
Here’s my confession: Radiohead. When they first came out back in the early 90s, I thought they were…fine. For whatever reason, though, they didn’t strike me as anything terribly special. Even when OK Computer came out, I appreciated it for what it was–sort of–but never went out of my way to listen to it.
But sometime after 2000, I started to understand what everyone was going on about, so I went back and started listening again for the beginning. It took until In Rainbows, but now I agree that they’re a special band. I’m a fan. I get it.
This must ring true with you. Who did you not get at first? Cleanse your soul with a confession. This is a safe space.
