Lil Nas X’s viral hit “Old Town Road” has been everywhere. The song sampled a hook from an instrumental Nine Inch Nails song and for his name jam, “PANINI,” he went back to the alternative well.
During the chorus of the song, you might recognize the Nevermind classic “In Bloom.” Nas was talking to Zane Lowe on Apple Beats 1 and said “PANINI” led the 20-something-year-old rapper to discover the glory that is Nirvana’s Nevermind.
“Like a lot of songs will even come to me like I’m sleeping or something. Like a melody and I’m like, wow, that’s fly. But the craziest things about “Panini,” is it introduced me to Nirvana’s album Nevermind. It’s like I always seen the cover but I never actually listened to it. And people was like, wow he sampled Nirvana. I was like, no. It’s like I didn’t realize I was using almost the exact same melody. I’ve been listening to it a lot lately actually.”
Kurt Cobain now shows up in the writing credits for a song I am sure will be another hit for rapper.
Who would have thought that Lil Nas X’s brand of trap-country would be a gateway drug for alternative music? We really do live in a post-genre world!
You’ll need to get to the chorus around :40 seconds to hear the “In Bloom”-y parts.
